Diminished Value Appraisals

Recover the Value Your Car Lost After an Accident

What is Diminished Value?

Diminished value is the loss in your vehicle's resale or trade-in value that happens simply because it now has an accident on its history — even after it's been repaired perfectly. A buyer (or a dealer running a CARFAX or AutoCheck report) will pay less for a car with a repair history than for an identical, accident-free one. That gap is money out of your pocket, and in most states, you're entitled to recover it.

Why It Matters

Most people assume that once their car is repaired, they're made whole. In reality, the accident is now part of your vehicle's permanent record. It shows up on vehicle history reports, it comes up in trade-in negotiations, and it can knock thousands of dollars off what your car is worth — regardless of how good the repair looks.

The insurance company that pays your claim rarely volunteers this information. Diminished value is a separate claim from your repair bill, and it's on you to ask for it.

The Three Types of Diminished Value

Inherent Diminished Value

The most common type — the automatic loss in value that comes from having an accident on your vehicle's history, even with a flawless repair.

Instantaneous Diminished Value

The difference in value the moment the accident happens, based on the cost and scope of repairs needed to restore the vehicle.

Repair-Related Diminished Value

Additional value lost from substandard repairs, mismatched paint, or aftermarket parts used instead of factory originals.
